The Basque Coast

Updated: Nov 20, 2018

Saying goodbye to my Basque home is by no means easy, especially when a new adventure arises, reminding me that there is so much more to see and do in this amazing place. Experiences I will never be able to carve out the time for.

The second of May will always be a dear memory in my heart. It was the day I traveled down the Basque coast by car with Unai, my local friend (always find a local friend, always). This particular trip took us from San Sebastián to Bilbao. So, we didn't cover the whole coast but we spent a day exploring cities along the way of what usually was an hour drive.

First, we drove through Zarautz. But then stopped in Getaria. Here we hiked up a small mountain with a lighthouse on it. It was windy and very cold but the small town was beautiful from up above.

Next, we went to Zumaia. This was the place with the layered rock that stuck straight out of the ground.

We then visited Ondarroa. This little town had beautiful blue water and red-roofed houses that traced the curves of the harbor.

After that, we went to Santimamiñe and the Oma forest. This was a painted forest created by Agustin Ibarrola.

Finally, we stopped in San Juan de Gaztelugatxe before arriving in Bilbao. Gaztelugatxe is a small island off the coast connected by a bridge with a small religious retreat located at the top dedicated to Saint John. You must climb about 230 steps to the top, which Unai informed me is tradition to count each step as you go. Once at the top, it is a tradition to ring the bell and make a wish.

Unai and I arrived in Bilbao just in time to have dinner. Overall, it was a wonderful mini road trip and I'm grateful forever that Unai took my on this adventure.
