Koh Phi Phi

Day One

Nico and I woke up early in Krabi and packed up all of our stuff. We waited downstairs for our taxi and said goodbye to Tin when it arrived.

We thought the ferry was leaving from Ao Nang Beach but the taxi took a while to get where it was going so I think it left from Krabi town. From the pier, it took us about an hour and a half to reach Phi Phi Don.

When we arrived, we noticed water taxi drivers lined up down the dock holding signs for the different resorts. We found a man holding a sign for Viking Nature Resort (where we were staying) and approached him. We weren't on his list of names yet because we had only booked our stay last night, but he didn't mind. Since we still had to wait for other passengers, our driver asked if we wanted to get anything from 7-11. We didn't need anything but decided to walk into town and see if we could find a GoPro. Sure enough, one of the first stores we saw had a large sign reading "GoPro."

I didn't buy one yet, wanting to compare a few prices later, but it was comforting to know there were GoPros available on the island. We walked back onto the pier just in time to load onto the boat with the other guests and sped off to the southeastern tip of the island.

When we arrived at the resort, we were given a welcome beverage (some kind of tea) and our bags were carried out to our room. We had booked a traditional bungalow, it being the cheapest option, but it was very beautiful and even came with a hammock. Instantly, we noticed how bad the mosquitos were and doused ourselves in bug spray.

The bungalow also had a little black kitten on the porch when we arrived. He was very friendly and loved to be pet. He crawled right onto my lap to snuggle and then onto Nico while he was in the hammock.

Once we were all settled, we decided to walk into town. There was a path that took us through the jungle, along secluded beaches, into the narrow streets of town. I really enjoyed the "off-the-beaten-path" feel this gave our resort.

We walked around town, stopping at a few shops that sold GoPros, comparing prices. We walked along the beach on the northern side of the island near where most of the hostels are. I didn't find this area nearly as nice as where we were staying.

After walking a bit, I bought some new flip flops because my others were hurting me and a new GoPro from the cheapest retailer we could find (still more expensive than buying one online). After that, we stopped for lunch at a random restaurant in town. I ordered pad see ew, which had a good flavor but the noodles seemed a bit overcooked.

Then, we walked back to the resort. I plugged the GoPro in to charge and then we decided to walk to Long Beach. The beach wasn't too crowded. Nico and I swam for a little while before I became hungry and needed a snack. Luckily, I had some oreos and peanut butter in the room.

After changing, Nico and I looked up restaurants on TripAdvisor and walked into town. We went to EFE's, a mediterranean restaurant. As usual, Nico and I ordered too much food. We had a tzatziki appetizer, a chicken wrap, and a spinach and onion Turkish "pizza". It was all very yummy and I was full before we could finish.

As soon as we asked for the check, it began to pour down rain. So, we sat for awhile and waited for it to subside before cramming under our one umbrella and heading back to the resort.

Day Two

I had paid extra to have the buffet breakfast at the hotel, which was alright. I liked the pancakes with honey.

After we ate, we snuggled with the bungalow kitten for a little. Then, we walked into town and followed signs to the viewpoint. There were a ton of stairs up the hill, which we started to climb. We eventually came across a group of monkeys playing in a little pond. Just around the corner from the monkeys, we came to a desk collecting 30 baht per person to get to the viewpoint (it's on private property I guess). Signs read that viewpoint 1 was only a few steps away. It wasn't that great of a view, however.

Viewpoint 2, on the other hand, was very nice. There were groups of other backpackers sitting abound and listening to shitty music. Nico and I stayed just long enough to take a few photos and then we headed back down to the trail.

Once we were back in town, we went to a restaurant called Anna's, which Nico had found on TripAdvisor, but it was closed. I then looked up a restaurant called the Grand PP Arcade, which was a very cute cafe and restaurant.

Nico ordered massaman curry and I had yellow curry. Both were very good. Each curry had a large piece of chicken, still on the bone, which was different from any other curry we'd tried so far.

After lunch, Nico and I walked back to the resort. We changed into bathing suits and headed to Long Beach again. We swam in the ocean a bit and sat on the sand. Eventually, we headed back to the beach closer to where we had checked in, hoping to get a better view of the sunset, but it was too cloudy.

We showered instead and walked into town to get dinner. This night we went to Papaya Restaurant and ordered stir-fried vegetables and chicken cashew. It was pretty good. It was refreshing to have a veggie dish. I miss fresh salads.

After dinner, we walked back to the resort. We went at a leisurely pace until the rain started to come down. Then we ran back to the room.

Day Three

On our last day, Nico and I slowly got up and started packing our things. We went down to the desk to check out and drop our bags off.

Then, we walked into town to get breakfast, saying "hi" to our bungalow kitty on the way. We ate at a cafe called the Mango Garden. I had a caramel macchiato and a waffle with nutella. Nico had a waffle with mango. Everything was delicious and we wished we had discovered this place sooner. After breakfast, we walked around town for a little to kill time before heading back to the resort.

When it was time to leave, we loaded all of our stuff into the water taxi and motored back over to the pier. We then had to wait a bit before getting on our ferry so we stopped at a random restaurant near the dock and I had a piña colada until it was time to leave.

The ferry ride was bumpier this time. Two girls in the row in front of us were struggling with it. I had to occasionally look up from my writing to gaze out the window (which is a lot coming from someone who doesn't usually get motion sick). Onboard the boat, Nico and I bought transfer tickets to Kata Beach and we were dropped off right outside our hotel.
